Presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the New York Hot Jazz Festival

Sun Oct 30, 9:30pm

Trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso is a first-call hot jazz musician who recently performed this same repertoire at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola alongside Wynton Marsalis. In addition to being a prolific recording artist and a long-term member of Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks, Kellso is also an acclaimed bandleader. His new project is the Mahogany Hall Pleasure Society Jazz Band, an expert group of musicians dedicated to performing early New Orleans Jazz. This is our final set of a special weekend co-presented with the New York Hot Jazz Festival, and we can’t think of a better way to wrap things up than to have a group of this caliber perform Louis Armstrong’s iconic music.

This set is part of Hot Jazz Age: From the First Jazz Recording to the Dawn of Swing (1917-1934), presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the New York Hot Jazz Festival, October 28-30. Full lineup:

Friday, October 28:

7:30pm: Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band with special guest vocalist Queen Esther

9:30pm: Patrick Bartley: Bix and Tram-A Retrospective

Saturday, October 29:

9:30pm: Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks – From Ballrooms to Society Balls: The Great New York Dance Bands of the Jazz Age

Speakeasy Quartet Reunion with trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso

The Speakeasy Quartet is pleased to welcome New York "hot jazz" trumpet ace Jon-Erik Kellso for a special reunion concert. Jon will reunite with his long-time pal, cellist Mike Karoub. The pair began playing jazz together in grade school over 35 years ago in Allen Park MI. Both have gone on to careers in music becoming world leaders in playing traditional jazz of the 1920's and '30's....And years ago both these  "young jazzers" played in Hugh Leal's Dixie Strollers (see 1989 picture!...but be prepared!)

Joining Jon and Mike will be pianist Mike Karloff and guitarist Hugh Leal.

(SEQ regular Dave Bennett will be at The San Diego Jazz Festival). The reunion quartet will play a specially assembled program of classic jazz chosen by Kellso and Karoub.

In New York as a member of Vince Giordano's Night Hawks big band, Jon has supplied music for Hollywood soundtracks: The Aviator, Ghost World, Revolutionary Road...and TV series: HBO's Boardwalk Empire, Mildred Pierce, The Knick and others.

Jon has played around the world at jazz festivals and clubs and recently was a guest of Wynton Marsalis for a week at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club Coca Cola in a salute to Louis Armstrong.
